According to officials, the crash occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. local time when the left engine of the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft detached shortly after takeoff, causing the plane — identified as Flight 2976 — to plunge to the ground. The aircraft struck the roof of a UPS Supply Chain warehouse and several nearby structures before bursting into flames.
Three of the victims were members of the flight crew. The remaining casualties included employees and visitors at businesses in the surrounding area.
Emergency crews continued their recovery and investigation efforts overnight.
