At least 28 killed in Angola illegal gold mine landslide
At least 28 people have been killed following a landslide at an illegal gold mining site in Nambuangongo Municipality in Angola’s northern Bengo Province, local authorities said.
Police spokesperson Gaspar Luis Inacio confirmed the toll, adding that 13 of the victims were members of the same family. He also said that two people remain missing as search and rescue operations continue, foreign media reports.
Authorities said emergency teams are still working at the site in an effort to locate individuals believed to be trapped beneath debris from the collapsed mine.
Medical officials at Bengo Central Hospital said several injured survivors are receiving treatment.
"Their condition is stable. They underwent X-ray examinations and remain under medical observation," said Francisco Rodrigues, the hospital’s health supervisor.
He added that all three patients are conscious and out of danger, with no immediate need for transfer to other medical facilities.
Illegal mining is a persistent issue in parts of Angola, where unsafe conditions and lack of regulation have contributed to frequent fatal accidents.
