Azerbaijan reaffirms commitment to prevent genocide on Holocaust Remembrance Day
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a message published on the social media platform X.
According to Caliber.Az, the post read: “On 27 January – International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we solemnly commemorate the victims of one of the gravest atrocities in human history.
“We reiterate our unwavering commitment to preventing genocide and crimes against humanity, and to countering religious and ethnic hatred, and all forms of intolerance.”
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed annually on January 27 in memory of the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of other victims persecuted and killed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War II.
The date coincides with the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp in 1945 by Soviet forces. Auschwitz later became the most powerful symbol of the Holocaust, where more than one million people were killed.
In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly formally designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, with the aim of honouring the victims, safeguarding the historical truth of the Holocaust, and promoting education to help prevent genocide, racism, and hatred in the future.
Each year, countries, international organisations, and institutions around the world hold commemorative ceremonies, educational initiatives, and moments of silence to mark the day.
