Baku hosts second day of global mine action conference PHOTO

The second day of the 4th International Conference on Mine Action has begun in Baku, with a final declaration expected to be adopted at the conclusion of the event.

The conference is organised by Azerbaijan’s Mine Action Agency (ANAMA) in cooperation with the United Nations office in Azerbaijan.

Held under the theme “Humanitarian Demining for Urban Recovery: Setting Standards of Excellence for Safe Settlements”, the conference focuses on the role of mine clearance in the safe and sustainable recovery of mine-affected areas, local media reports.

The programme includes panel discussions on integrating mine action into urban recovery, technology and innovation for safer and more effective humanitarian demining, and national experiences and lessons learned in humanitarian mine action.

Local and international experts, as well as officials, are taking part in the discussions.

The conference aims to raise international awareness of Azerbaijan’s mine problem, strengthen partnerships in humanitarian demining, promote the exchange of innovative approaches and best practices, and mobilise international efforts to address the threat posed by landmines.

More than 400 representatives from 60 countries are participating in the conference. A final declaration is expected to be adopted at the end of the event.
