Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan have discussed ways to ease existing visa regimes as part of efforts to expand cooperation in the consular sphere.

The issue was addressed during the latest round of consular consultations between the two countries’ foreign ministries in Ashgabat on September 2, Caliber.Az reports per Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry.

The Azerbaijani delegation was led by Emil Safarov, head of the Consular Department, while the Turkmen delegation was headed by Dovletmirat Muratov, head of the Consular Services Department.

Representatives of Turkmenistan’s Interior Ministry, Migration Service and Prosecutor General’s Office, as well as officials from Azerbaijan’s Interior Ministry and staff of the Azerbaijani Embassy, also attended the consultations.

The sides exchanged views on the current state and prospects for developing cooperation between the two countries in the consular sphere, with particular attention to protecting citizens’ rights and interests.

They also addressed cooperation in the areas of internal affairs, citizenship, migration, justice, education and other important fields.

Following the talks, the sides signed a protocol and agreed to hold the next round of consular consultations in Baku in 2027.
