Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov is in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, to participate in the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation.
During his official visit, Sharifov met with Tajikistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Usmonali Usmonzoda to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional environmental concerns, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The international conference, held from May 29 to 31, brings together world leaders, UN representatives, international organisations, financial institutions, private sector actors, academics, and civil society to tackle the accelerating loss of glaciers due to climate change.
Glaciers, which play a critical role in maintaining the planet’s ecological balance, have already lost about one-third of their mass due to rising global temperatures. The continued melting threatens water security for billions, disrupts agriculture, and jeopardises hydropower generation essential for many countries’ energy needs and economic stability.
By adopting a multi-stakeholder approach, the summit aims to promote collaborative solutions to mitigate glacier loss, safeguard water resources, and reinforce climate resilience across vulnerable regions.
