Azerbaijan unveils number of people killed in Armenian genocide

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan is investigating several criminal cases related to genocide and massacres committed by Armenian armed groups against the unarmed civilian population of Azerbaijan.

Ilgar Safarov, a Senior Assistant to Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General for Special Assignments, Junior Counselor of Justice, made the remarks at a joint briefing on October 6, Caliber.Az reports.

The briefing was arranged by the country’s General Prosecutor's Office and Foreign Ministry to report on the crimes committed by Armenian servicemen and representatives of illegal Armenian armed groups against Azerbaijan from 1988 to the present day.

He also made public the number of those killed in the course of the genocide crimes committed by Armenia against Azerbaijan.

“During the genocide in Karkijahan, 17 people were killed, and they tried to kill seven more. Two people were taken hostage and 1,796 people were forced to leave their permanent place of residence. With regard to 47 armed persons who committed these crimes, a decision was made to bring them to the investigation as defendants, as well as to choose a measure of restraint in the form of arrest (in absentia).

During the genocide in Baganis-Ayrim, 7 people were killed, two more were tried to be killed. As many as 438 people were forced to leave their permanent place of residence. With regard to 18 armed persons who committed crimes, a decision was made to bring them to the investigation as defendants, as well as to choose a measure of restraint in the form of arrest (in absentia).

During the genocide in Meshali, 25 people were killed, another 14 tried to kill, 2 people were taken hostage, 358 villagers were forced to leave their permanent place of residence. With regard to 9 Armenians who committed these crimes, it was decided to bring them to the investigation as defendants, as well as to choose a preventive measure in the form of arrest (in absentia).

During the genocide in Garadaghly, 67 people were killed, two more were tried to be killed, 49 people were taken hostage, 941 people were forced to leave their permanent place of residence. With regard to 12 armed persons who committed these crimes, it was decided to bring them to the investigation as defendants, as well as to choose a measure of restraint in the form of arrest (in absentia).

In the genocide of the population of the Azerbaijani city of Khojaly, 613 people were killed, eight families were completely destroyed, another 487 people were tried to be killed. As many as 1,275 women, children and old people were taken hostage and tortured. Some 5,379 people were forced to leave their permanent place of residence. With regard to 40 armed persons who committed these crimes, a decision was made to bring them to the investigation as defendants, as well as to elect a preventive measure in the form of arrest (in absentia) against them.

In the village of Bashlybel, Kalbajar region, 12 people were killed, 14 people were taken hostage, 7 out of 36 people who were captured died from their wounds, 29 people were forced to leave their permanent place of residence. In the genocide in the tunnel in the Kalbajar region, 26 civilians were killed who wanted to cross the tunnel connecting 35 villages with the regional centre. Their bodies were burned along with the cars. Thirty people were taken hostage. Twenty one people were killed in the village of Bashguneipara, Aghdara region, they tried to kill four more, 599 people were forced to leave their permanent place of residence,” Safarov noted.
