Azerbaijani envoy's final meeting with UN chief highlights contributions to multilateral diplomacy
Yashar Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York for a farewell meeting.
According to a report on social media platform X, the meeting “was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere”, per Caliber.Az.
During their conversation, it was noted that Ambassador Aliyev’s contributions to multilateral diplomacy and his “effective and energetic” defence of Azerbaijan’s national interests were acknowledged.
The report also highlighted that during the meeting, Ambassador Aliyev’s work in promoting UN values was celebrated. His “contribution to multilateral diplomacy” was particularly emphasized, reflecting his dedication to both the UN and Azerbaijan’s presence within the organization.
Aliyev’s tenure as Permanent Representative ended with a decree from the President of Azerbaijan on December 20, 2024, recalling him from his post. Following this, Aliyev was appointed as Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his diplomatic career.
Azerbaijan has been an active member of the United Nations since joining on March 2, 1992. Over the years, the country has participated in numerous initiatives, including securing leadership roles and contributing to global discussions on regional security, economic development, and humanitarian concerns. It has also worked closely with UN agencies like UNDP, UNICEF, and UNHCR, focusing on issues such as poverty eradication and education.
More recently, Azerbaijan hosted the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku in November 2024, underscoring its commitment to global climate action.
