Belarusian leader voices support for Brazil’s incumbent president ahead of vote PHOTO
Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has voiced political support for Brazil’s incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ahead of the South American country’s upcoming elections, while also stressing the need to deepen Belarus-Brazil relations.
Lukashenko made the remarks during a meeting with Brazil’s Ambassador to Belarus, Bernard Klingl, on February 2, Caliber.Az reports per Belarusian media.
“Brazil is going through an important political period. As far as I know, this year you will hold general elections, where you will elect practically everyone. Frankly speaking, I do not envy you, because this is a challenging time. We sincerely hope that the current president of Brazil will remain in office following these elections. To my knowledge, he has confirmed his participation,” Lukashenko said.

The Belarusian president also pledged support to ensure a stable electoral process. “If necessary, we will do our utmost to ensure that the elections in Brazil take place in a peaceful and calm atmosphere, in the interests of the Brazilian people. If that is required,” he assured.
Beyond politics, Lukashenko emphasised the importance of strengthening economic and diplomatic relations between Belarus and Brazil. “I think we should step up efforts to build our relations and not overcomplicate things. We need to keep it simple. The economy is the foundation.
So, we need to identify areas of economic cooperation that are of interest to Brazil and, conversely, to Belarus. This is achievable,” he said.
He noted that a number of mutually beneficial issues remain unresolved. “Mutually beneficial issues, which I have raised before. But some of them have not been resolved. Since they are mutually beneficial (as you can see, time is changing very rapidly), we need to approach these issues seriously and decide whether we will move in this direction,” Lukashenko added.
Highlighting the alignment of expert opinion in both countries, the Belarusian president said: “This will help and is already helping to forge more effective relations between our countries.”
