No breakthrough yet in US-Iran talks, Qatar says

No agreement has yet been reached to resolve tensions between the United States and Iran, with negotiations still ongoing, TASS reports, citing Qatar’s Foreign Ministry.

“At the moment, we cannot say that an agreement has been reached. <...> We are still trying to get there,” said Majid bin Mohammed al-Ansari during a press conference. He stressed that mediators have not imposed deadlines on the process, adding: “The situation may change in the coming hours or days.”

Al-Ansari outlined that any return to substantive negotiations would require concrete de-escalation steps on the ground. “For negotiations to return, certain things must happen on the ground. The first and most important is a return to a ceasefire, guarantees of non-attacks on ships, and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” he said. He added that the minimum condition for progress would be restoring the previous status quo in the strait in line with international law and in coordination with all coastal states.

On August 2, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had agreed to cancel a planned large-scale strike on Iran in order to facilitate a deal with Tehran. Writing on Truth Social, Trump said Iran and other countries in the region had urged Washington to refrain from military action, as the basic contours of a future agreement had already been outlined. According to him, the prospective deal would include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the elimination of what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.

However, on August 3, Esmail Baghaei rejected Trump’s assertion that direct negotiations between Tehran and Washington were taking place, calling the claim false. He said Iran was engaged only in talks with Oman, focused specifically on ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, according to Axios, Qatari mediators have hosted separate consultations in Doha with representatives from Iran, the United States and Oman. The report said that “progress was made” during these discussions, although no formal agreement has yet been announced.
