Media: CONCACAF members weigh pulling support for Infantino's FIFA re-election

04 August 2026 16:06

Several member associations of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) are considering withdrawing their letters of support for Gianni Infantino's re-election as president of FIFA, The Guardian reports.

According to the newspaper, all 41 CONCACAF member associations had previously submitted letters backing Infantino's re-election ahead of the FIFA World Cup. However, many are now considering retracting their support. Citing its sources, the outlet said that several federations pledged to withdraw their endorsements during a meeting of CONCACAF members, while some may have already done so privately.

The report adds that the US Soccer Federation is particularly dissatisfied with Infantino, especially over the public backlash surrounding the decision to rescind a red card shown to United States forward Folarin Balogun during the recent World Cup.

Earlier, The Guardian revealed that UEFA was preparing to seek Infantino's removal as FIFA president through a vote of no confidence if he refused to step down.

The dispute stems from Infantino's proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights to the FIFA World Cup to private investors. The plan was rejected by UEFA, CONCACAF, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), prompting Infantino to abandon the project.
