Belgium to install air defence system at Port of Antwerp
Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever announced that an air defence system will be installed at the Port of Antwerp, Europe’s second-largest cargo port by throughput.
Bart De Wever said the NASAMS-type air defence system has already been ordered, Caliber.Az reports via Belgian media.
The country’s Ministry of Defence reported that the first battery of the air defence system is expected to become operational in 2027.
The system is designed to protect against fighter aircraft, drones, and other short-range aerial threats.
Belgium recorded numerous drone incidents last year, leading to temporary closures of airports and a military airbase. Drones were also spotted over the Port of Antwerp, including near nuclear power plants, the BASF chemical facility, and the Europa terminal.
