Britain’s PM pushes to maintain Iran ceasefire after recent instability
The United Kingdom has expressed hope that the ceasefire in Iran will continue to hold following the collapse of peace talks in Islamabad.
The two leaders discussed the recent negotiations held in Pakistan and called on both sides to find a way forward, according to a statement from the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer after a phone call with Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tariq.
They agreed on the importance of maintaining the ceasefire and avoiding further escalation.
Starmer thanked Oman for its efforts in rescuing sailors from distressed vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. He also said the UK, together with partners, is working to restore long-term freedom of navigation in the region.
In addition, he confirmed Britain’s readiness to support Oman’s security, including through the supply of drones developed in cooperation with Ukraine. Starmer said Ukrainian expertise had played an important role in protecting the region from Iranian attacks.
Earlier, US Vice President J.D. Vance said that no agreement had been reached with Tehran after consultations, and that the American delegation had left for the United States after presenting its final offer to Iran.
