British navy digs out world's most remote post office after heavy Antarctic snow
05 December 2022 05:02
The British Royal Navy has come to the rescue of four UK women working at an isolated Antarctic scientific base after their buildings have been buried under layers of snow.
As the BBC reported, sailors and royal marines from HMS Protector spent two days digging the women out from the Port Lockroy site.
The damaged roof of Bransfield Hut, which entails a museum, gift shop and the world's most remote post office has been fixed in the process.
The employed women were chosen among over 6,000 applicants to manage the base and share the island with a colony of indigenous Gentoo penguins.
They were setting up the station when heavy snowfall between two and four metres buried the buildings.
