CNN: US war against Iran cost nearly $40 billion
US Defence Department spending on the operation against Iran amounted to approximately $40 billion, CNN reports, citing the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
The figure includes the cost of munitions used, destroyed equipment, and damage to US bases, but excludes operational expenses already included in the Pentagon’s 2026 fiscal budget, CSIS senior adviser Mark Cancian told the broadcaster.
He noted that the largest expense for the Pentagon was ammunition, which accounted for $26 billion.
This was due to the extensive use of long-range, high-tech and costly weapon systems.
The US reportedly used around 1,000 Tomahawk missiles, each costing about $2.5 million, he added.
According to CSIS estimates, the first 100 hours of combat cost the United States $3.7 billion, while the daily cost of the war declined over time as the frequency of strikes decreased.
Following a signed agreement and plans for continued negotiations, the US–Iran war has effectively been paused for now, with President Donald Trump claiming the outcome as a victory for the United States.
“You’re welcome!” Trump wrote on Thursday on his social media platform, where he also outlined what he described as the benefits of a memorandum of understanding that sets the stage for 60 more days of negotiations with Iran.
“Oil is flowing, Iran can never have a nuclear weapon (the world will be safe!), the stock markets are roaring, jobs are at records, and prices are dropping (affordability!). Our country is strong, safe, and respected like never before,” trump added.
