EAEU-Iran free trade zone roadmap set for approval in September
The roadmap outlining the implementation of the free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Iran for the years 2025 to 2028 is expected to be officially approved in September 2025.
According to Caliber.Az, citing the press service of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), this was confirmed by EEC Chairman Bakytzhan Sagintayev during his meeting with Kazem Jalali, Iran’s Ambassador to Russia.
The discussions focused on current issues related to Eurasian economic integration, particularly the strategic priorities of the EAEU’s international engagements. Both sides exchanged views on potential areas of collaboration under the comprehensive free trade agreement, which envisages the removal of customs duties on 90% of traded goods.
Sagintayev underscored that the Commission is placing strong emphasis on thoroughly preparing the roadmap for the agreement’s implementation over the 2025–2028 period. He stated that the roadmap is scheduled to be adopted at the upcoming Joint Committee session in September, which will ensure that all planned directions for cooperation are advanced in a coordinated manner.
“The Commission considers the roadmap a critical instrument to advance the agreement’s goals,” the EEC said in its statement.
Sagintayev also noted that the upgraded framework has significantly enhanced trade and economic ties between Iran and the EAEU member countries. He highlighted that bilateral trade turnover saw considerable growth in 2024, increasing by 14.6% to reach $5.9 billion. Exports from EAEU states to Iran rose by 18% during the same period.
