Energy expert assures COP29 great opportunity for global cooperation
The Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) is a great opportunity for global cooperation, Mohammed Abu Laban, head of the Clean Hydrogen Specialist Group at the International Hydrogen Energy Association, told Report.
The expert noted that strategic planning for climate change projects in both developing and developed countries is a critical issue, and the PRA29 can focus on developing robust mechanisms to support countries in the green transition.
Speaking about his expectations from the upcoming PRA29, Abu Laban noted that "it may not be a breakthrough in terms of implementing the Paris Agreement, but it could nevertheless be a cornerstone for setting ambitious goals for the future and strengthening further cooperation based on existing agreements."
Abu Laban noted that while there are ambitious climate change goals, realising them remains a challenge.
"COP29 could focus on moving countries to take ownership of existing commitments and encouraging them to develop more detailed implementation plans," he emphasised.
He believes that the current geopolitical situation could affect international cooperation on climate change.
"I hope that COP29 can provide a platform for countries to put aside differences and focus on the common goal of tackling climate change," he concluded.
