Entry, exit from South Korean National Assembly blocked after declaration of martial law
The entrances and exits of the National Assembly building in South Korea have been blocked following the president's declaration of martial law.
Earlier reports indicated that the National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik had entered the Parliament building, Caliber.Az reports citing Korean media.
The opposition has condemned the president's decision, calling it unconstitutional. The Toburo Democratic Party has decided to convene its lawmakers in response.
Additionally, there were reports that South Korea's Ministry of Defence had called a meeting of "key commanders."
President Yoon Suk Yeol declared emergency martial law, accusing the opposition of "anti-state activities plotting rebellion."
"The martial law is aimed at eradicating pro-North Korean forces and to protect the constitutional order of freedom," Yoon said in the televised address.
This decision came after the opposition Democratic Party railroaded a downsized budget bill in the parliamentary budget committee, and submitted impeachment motions against a state auditor and the chief prosecutor.
