EU ambassadors hold emergency meeting following Russia-US summit in Alaska
Ambassadors from the 27 European Union countries convened in Brussels on August 16 for an emergency session to discuss the outcome of the recent Russia-US summit in Alaska.
The meeting was called in response to information US President Donald Trump had shared with European leaders.
“An emergency meeting of Coreper (the EU Committee of Permanent Representatives) began Saturday morning to determine next steps regarding Ukraine,” the diplomatic source told Russian media.
EU countries are reportedly seeking to coordinate their positions and may issue their own statement concerning the Russian-American negotiations.
“In Brussels, and indeed in national capitals across the EU, few people slept last night awaiting the results of the Anchorage summit and President Trump’s subsequent call, during which he likely revealed more than he did at his public press conference,” the diplomat added. The call reportedly included discussions with the head of the European Commission, NATO Secretary General, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Alaska summit on August 15 brought together Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, along with their senior officials. The Russian delegation included Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, while Trump was accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff.
This was the first meeting between Putin and Trump in six years, following their last encounter in Osaka in June 2019.
Putin described the discussions as “useful and thorough” and emphasised the need to restore cooperation with the United States. Trump stated that while the two sides had reached an understanding on many issues, no formal agreements were finalised during the summit.
