EU faces political paralysis over Ukraine aid, Iran response
The European Union’s inability to make coordinated decisions on financial support for Ukraine and responses to military developments in Iran highlights a deep systemic crisis within the bloc, according to Politico, citing EU diplomats, officials, and experts.
Spanish MEP Nacho Sánchez Amor said, “There are serious problems in how we take decisions. Every month there’s a new issue that highlights this trend. We have to react.”
One example cited by sources is the blocking of sanctions against Israeli settlers in the West Bank: 26 of the 27 member states supported the measures, but Hungary vetoed them.
Additionally, there is no agreement in the EU on sanctions against Russia or on a €90 billion military loan to Ukraine for 2026–2027.
According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, funding remains blocked due to the stance of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
