EU pledges continued support for Ukraine despite Trump’s US election win

06 November 2024 20:01

The EU has announced that it will continue to support Ukraine after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, said representative of the EU Foreign Policy Service, Peter Stano.

Stano recalled that the new US president will take office only in 2025, and until then the program of support for Ukraine in Europe will not change, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

"We have consistently stated our commitment to our obligations and remain united in our determination to continue supporting Ukraine," he said.

However, prior to election, Ukrainians responded with a mix of concern and determination to the likelihood of Donald Trump’s reelection as US president. His recent vow to “stop wars” in a victory speech has prompted anxiety in Kyiv, especially after almost three years of war with Russia. With Trump’s history of questioning US aid to Ukraine and his claim that he could end the war in a day, officials in Kyiv are preparing for a future where support from the US may be uncertain.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, despite having praised Trump’s “peace through strength” approach after their meeting in September, acknowledged that Ukraine will need to rely more on other Western allies for support, particularly as Russia plans a renewed offensive, potentially with help from North Korean troops.

The experience of a nine-month aid blockage by Trump’s Republican Party in 2023-2024, which strained Ukraine’s resources, has left Kyiv wary of further challenges under a second Trump term.

In recent development Donald Trump was elected president, capping a remarkable comeback four years after he was voted out of the White House and ushering in a new American leadership likely to test democratic institutions at home and relations abroad.

Trump, 78, recaptured the White House on November 6 by securing more than the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency, Edison Research projected, following a campaign of dark rhetoric that deepened the polarization in the country.
