EU pushes for faster deportations despite record return rate
European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner has called for tougher deportation rules across the European Union, arguing that the current pace of migrant returns remains insufficient despite recent improvements.
According to data cited by DW, approximately 135,000 people were deported from the EU in 2025 out of more than 491,000 individuals subject to repatriation. This corresponds to a return rate of 28%, the highest recorded in the past decade. For comparison, the rate stood at 16% in 2022.
Brunner acknowledged the increase in efficiency but said existing mechanisms still fall short. He emphasised the need for the rapid adoption of a new repatriation regulation proposed by the European Commission.
The proposed framework introduces stricter obligations for individuals facing deportation, strengthens coordination among EU member states, and предусматривает the possibility of longer detention periods prior to removal. It also includes provisions allowing asylum seekers to be transferred to so-called “return centres” located outside the EU.
