Canada in talks to join EU’s €90 billion loan to Ukraine

The Canadian authorities are negotiating with the European Union (EU) over a possible contribution to a €90 billion loan for Ukraine, the Financial Times reports, citing sources.

The sides are seeking to agree on the amount Canada will provide as part of the loan to Ukraine before the EU summit in Montreal at the end of October.

According to the newspaper, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is seeking to strengthen transatlantic ties and reduce Ottawa’s dependence on Washington. Sources said he intends to build an “alliance of liberal powers” committed to the multilateral order, with Canada’s participation in financing the loan to Ukraine intended to demonstrate its commitment to its European allies.
