EU warns Eritrea of war in Ethiopia
The European Union has warned that the involvement of Eritrean forces in the war with the rebels in Ethiopia will further escalate the conflict.
EU Commission Vice-President, High Representative for Foreign Relations and Security Policy Josep Borrell, in a statement on Twitter, stated that the entry of Eritrean troops into Tigray province from the Ethiopian border will further fuel the ongoing conflicts, TRT Haber reports.
Borrell urged the warring parties not to forget that there is no military solution to the problem and to make joint efforts for the benefit of their people.
The insurgent Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) claimed earlier this week that Eritrean troops had entered Tigray across the border to support the Ethiopian army.
Eritrea was subject to sanctions for intervening in the civil war in Ethiopia before.
Despite the efforts of the USA, EU and African Union, the parties, who could not directly start peace negotiations, started to clash again months later in August.
Both sides blamed each other for breaking the ceasefire.
The clashes between the army and the TPLF in Ethiopia, which started in November 2020, led to the death of thousands of people and the displacement of hundreds of thousands from their homes.
