Belarus forms new airborne assault brigade near Ukrainian border

01 August 2025 17:23

Belarus is establishing a new airborne assault brigade under the Special Operations Forces (SOF), with the unit to be stationed in the country’s southern Gomel region, which borders northern Ukraine.

Commander of the SOF of the Armed Forces, Vadim Denisenko, announced the development during an appearance on the First Information Channel. He said the new unit, named the 37th Separate Airborne Assault Guards Brigade, is already in the process of formation, with one of its battalions fully established, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media

Denisenko explained that the decision to deploy the brigade in the Gomel region was driven by the need to strengthen Belarus’s southern flank, which he described as the most "restless" direction in terms of security. He added that this area demands increased vigilance and operational readiness.

The SOF is also undergoing broader structural expansion. According to Denisenko, an anti-aircraft missile regiment has recently been added, and a rocket artillery regiment is nearly complete, with about 70 per cent of its formation already achieved. Plans are also being developed for the creation of a new control brigade.

He emphasized that these developments are part of ongoing efforts to ensure combat readiness and to reinforce key strategic areas.
