TRT Haber: Azerbaijani gas to boost Syria’s power supply to 10 hours daily

01 August 2025 15:10

Syria is poised to see a significant improvement in its electricity supply, with households expected to receive up to 10 hours of power per day, thanks to the imminent launch of Azerbaijani natural gas deliveries via Türkiye.

This marks a dramatic increase from the current average of just 3 to 4 hours of electricity per day, TRT Haber reports.

According to the report, the gas deliveries are scheduled to begin on August 2, transiting through the Turkish province of Kilis into northern Syria. The project is being hailed as a landmark step in regional energy cooperation and post-conflict infrastructure recovery.

The development follows the restoration of a previously damaged cross-border gas pipeline, which was out of service for years due to the armed conflict in Syria. The pipeline was fully rehabilitated by the end of May and is now capable of transporting up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas annually.

The energy will be used to power a major electricity plant in Aleppo province, enabling the generation of up to 1,200 megawatts of electricity. This figure is expected to nearly double Syria's current electricity production capacity.

“Supplies of Azerbaijani gas will make it possible to generate up to 1,200 megawatts of electricity at a power plant in Aleppo province, which will double electricity generation in Syria,” the TRT Haber report stated.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar praised the trilateral cooperation involving Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Qatar. He acknowledged the role of Baku and Doha in addressing Syria’s deepening energy crisis and stressed the humanitarian and strategic significance of the project.

In addition to gas supplies, Bayraktar announced plans to expand the direct export of electricity from Türkiye to Syria. The volume is expected to increase to 280 megawatts, a move that will reportedly provide consistent electricity to approximately 1.6 million Syrian subscribers.
