Europe sets new record for LNG imports in April
Europe set a new all-time record for imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in April, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE).
LNG deliveries from European terminals into the EU gas transmission system reached approximately 12.8 billion cubic metres last month, marking a 1% increase compared with March, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The April total also represents a 20% rise on the same month in 2024, making it the highest monthly figure ever recorded by GIE. The previous record had been set only a month earlier, in March 2025, at 12.7 billion cubic metres.
Analysts say the increase reflects continued efforts by European countries to bolster energy security and diversify supply sources amid shifting global energy dynamics.
In mid-April, it was reported that the United States had surpassed Russia in liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries to Europe in the first quarter of 2025, 18 billion cubic metres compared to Russia’s 10 billion cubic metres. Imports of LNG from Russia amounted to just 8 million tonnes, the lowest figure since 2021.
Meanwhile, the EU has decided not to ban imports of Russian LNG for the time being. According to journalists, European authorities are uncertain about alternative energy sources and wish to maintain a strong position in trade negotiations with the United States.
It was previously reported that gas injections into European storage facilities had reached their highest level in three years.
