Cyberattack wave hits US water systems across 12 states

05 August 2026 15:45

Suspected cyberattacks have targeted water and wastewater utilities in at least 12 US states, according to multiple sources cited by ABC News.

Iran is considered the leading suspect behind the cyber intrusions, which are capable of locking out utility operators by changing passwords or disabling alarm systems, the sources said. However, officials have not publicly confirmed Tehran’s involvement.

Despite the incidents, there have been no widespread disruptions to drinking water supplies or wastewater treatment operations, the sources added.

The FBI has advised utilities to disconnect critical systems from the internet whenever possible, deploy systems with circuit breakers, and ensure staff can switch to manual operations if automated controls are compromised.

Michigan is among the states affected. State police confirmed they are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with federal authorities.

“All systems continued to operate safely, issues were addressed by local operators, and there are no known impacts that posed a public health concern,” the police said, citing information from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

The Michigan State Police added that the FBI is leading the investigation and directed further inquiries to the bureau.
