China tightens overseas travel rules for citizens

China has introduced stricter rules governing overseas travel for its citizens, tightening border-crossing procedures under a new 19-point directive issued by the State Council.

The directive, published on July 31 and posted on the State Council's official website, establishes a system aimed at preventing risks and strengthening security oversight of Chinese nationals abroad, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Taipei Times.

Under the new regulations, citizens must provide accurate information about their travel plans and, when required, submit additional supporting documents.

Individuals found guilty of fraud involving immigration documents or crimes committed abroad may be banned from leaving China for up to three years.

Violations of export control regulations or other laws related to national security may also result in travel restrictions.

Foreign nationals will face reciprocal measures, including entry bans to China ranging from one to five years.

In addition, migration service agencies must register with the country's immigration authorities within 15 days of their establishment.

Analysts say the measures are designed to strengthen oversight of cross-border activities and prevent the loss of "talent, technology, information and social networks."

Chinese state-run newspaper Global Times said the new rules are intended to adapt to modern geopolitical tensions and the rise of transnational crime, rather than to isolate the country.

The regulations are due to take effect on September 15.
