Finland develops counter-drone system for land and sea operations

05 August 2026 15:31

Finland has begun developing a new system designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) across both land and maritime domains, according to project officials.

Johannes Kallionpää, who heads the initiative, told Helsingin Sanomat that the Finnish government has allocated additional funding to strengthen counter-drone capabilities.

“We have received additional funding from the government to develop counter-UAV capabilities,” he said.

The planned system is intended for deployment on armoured vehicles and patrol boats, reflecting a focus on both ground and coastal security. The broader program will also incorporate fixed surveillance and strike systems, portable interception tools, and “protected mobile complexes” mounted on armoured platforms and vessels.

Kallionpää said the project remains in the development phase, with serial production not expected before 2028, when authorities plan to submit a formal funding request.
