EU states gain greater freedom on energy security spending
The European Commission has given European Union member states greater flexibility in spending on energy security amid risks to energy supplies, according to a statement published on its website.
Under the decision, EU countries will be able to allocate additional funds to strengthen the resilience of their energy systems and reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. Such spending will not be fully taken into account when assessing compliance with the EU’s budgetary rules.
The European Commission noted that the measure is particularly relevant amid the conflict in the Middle East and the associated risks to global energy markets.
The relaxation will apply from 2026 to 2028. However, additional spending must remain limited and be directly linked to ensuring energy security.
