European Commission unveils bold plan to militarise EU by 2030
The European Commission has announced a comprehensive strategy for the militarisation of the EU by 2030, encapsulated in the newly released White Paper on Defence.
This ambitious plan includes a long-term commitment to arming Ukraine as part of broader efforts to strengthen European defence capabilities, Caliber.Az reports via the European Commission’s message.
This new defence package aims to provide financial mechanisms for EU member states, fostering a sharp increase in investments directed at enhancing weapon production and military capabilities across the union.
The White Paper also emphasises the importance of bolstering military support for Ukraine, underscoring the need for closer integration between European and Ukrainian defence industries. One of the most notable proposals is the creation of a unified arms market within the EU, which would include the participation of Ukraine.
Despite the expansion of military collaboration, the European Commission made it clear that this initiative does not seek to create a European army. The placement of defence contracts in other EU member states will not differ from orders placed on national territory, which will apply not only to final products but also to all components.
In addition to EU member states, the European Commission plans to include Norway and Ukraine in this expanded arms market, reflecting broader geopolitical interests. European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius addressed the proposal during a press conference in Brussels, where he suggested that the European Commission could take a more active role in military procurement.
