European observers caught spying in Azerbaijan's Zangilan and Lachin directions VIDEO
New video footage obtained by Caliber.Az reveals European observers engaging in intelligence-gathering activities along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on March 26.
This time, the surveillance took place in the Zangilan and Lachin directions, where four individuals, traveling in two SUVs bearing EU flags, were recorded scanning Azerbaijani territories through binoculars.
The footage, captured by Azerbaijan’s State Border Service units stationed in the area, provides clear evidence of their activities.
The EU Mission in Armenia (EUMA) has been regularly patrolling the border under the guise of observation, but its actions have often raised suspicions. Established in 2023 with 100 personnel, the mission has been repeatedly criticized for allegedly conducting intelligence operations, not just against Azerbaijan, but also targeting Russia and Iran. While officially tasked with monitoring, the mission's presence has been seen as largely symbolic, serving as a platform for Western political gestures toward Armenia.
Over the past year, several high-profile Western politicians have visited EUMA’s observation posts, further amplifying concerns. In July 2024, a US congressional delegation accompanied mission personnel to assess the situation along the border. In November, Polish President Andrzej Duda visited an observation site, engaging with staff while peering toward Azerbaijani territory. French Ambassador Olivier Decottignies has also made multiple visits, occasionally posting ambiguous remarks on social media regarding border tensions.
Azerbaijan has consistently voiced objections to the EU mission’s activities. President Ilham Aliyev has particularly criticized the mission’s extension, which was implemented without coordination with Baku. In December 2024, Aliyev outlined conditions for a peace agreement with Armenia, including a strict rejection of third-party military deployments along the border.
