A former AfD politician has been assaulted outside his home in Kocherscheid, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, by two masked individuals, suffering head and facial injuries. The state security authorities are investigating the incident.
Rainer Tüschenbönner, who had previously been elected to the Windeck local council on the AfD party list, told the WDR that he was targeted with insults such as “leftist rat” and “traitor”, Caliber.Az reports per German media.

He and his wife, who was also a candidate, had left the party shortly before the North Rhine-Westphalia local elections, publicly announcing that they intended to serve as independents.
The couple reported receiving threats after distancing themselves from the AfD during the campaign and communicating their independent candidacy to voters through online platforms and leaflets. Tüschenbönner said he had resigned from the party because he observed some members cultivating links to far-right extremists.
Alexandra Gauß, the Green mayor of Windeck, condemned the attack on social media, stating: “Violence, in any form, has no place in our community, and certainly not in local democracy. The coarsening of language on social media does not come without consequences. Words can hurt, incite, and ultimately lead to violence.”
The AfD in Windeck also strongly condemned the assault, emphasising that the party rejects all forms of violence.
To ensure his safety, local council members plan to accompany Tüschenbönner to and from council meetings.
