Axios: FBI uncovers 2,400 JFK assassination records following Trump’s executive order
Though the specifics of the documents remain unknown, the revelation has sparked major interest, raising concerns over how government agencies handle the release of such crucial information.
Jefferson Morley, an expert on the assassination and vice president of the Mary Ferrell Foundation, a major source for Kennedy records, called the discovery a significant step, saying it demonstrated the FBI’s commitment to responding to the president’s order, Caliber.Az reports, citing Axios.
Despite the new revelations, experts caution that these documents are unlikely to definitively resolve questions regarding whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone or as part of a wider conspiracy. Under the JFK Records Act, documents related to the assassination were to be submitted to the review board and eventually released to the National Archives. However, these newly discovered records were not part of that process.
In 2017, President Trump delayed the release of records identified by the government, following advice from the CIA, while President Joe Biden later authorized limited disclosures that did not fully comply with the JFK Records Act. Secrecy advocates in government have argued that full disclosure could jeopardize intelligence methods and implicate officials involved in the events.
Trump, however, has long regretted not releasing all assassination records during his first term and promised to make them public during his 2024 campaign. This includes not only documents related to JFK’s assassination but also those pertaining to the 1968 killing of his brother, Robert F. Kennedy. Trump also pledged to release records about the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
Despite Trump's order, intelligence agencies are still pushing for certain redactions in the documents, leading to frustration within the White House. According to sources, Trump has become increasingly irate at the ongoing delays, with one official commenting, “When POTUS hears about this stonewalling, he’s gonna hit the roof.” Another source described the situation as “total Deep State bulls**t,” with some speculating that all of the records could be released online soon, as Trump aims to fulfill his campaign promise.
The newly discovered FBI files could also have an impact on the ongoing lawsuit filed by the Mary Ferrell Foundation, which claims that additional documents related to the assassination, including recordings of mobster Carlos Marcello and CIA files on George Joannides, were withheld by federal agencies.
