Trump proposes immediate peace talks with Putin, Zelenskyy after Alaska summit
US President Donald Trump said that his recent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was “very good” and raised the possibility of a three-way meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin “almost immediately” after his upcoming bilateral talks in Alaska.
“There’s a very good chance that we’re going to have a second meeting, which will be more productive than the first, because the first is I’m going to find out where we are and what we’re doing,” Trump told journalists, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
He added, “I would like to do it almost immediately, and we’ll have a quick second meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy and myself, if they’d like to have me there.”
Trump also issued a pointed warning to Moscow, saying Russia would face “severe consequences” if President Putin refuses to agree to end the war in Ukraine.
The remarks followed a high-level conference call between Zelenskyy, Trump, and European allies, during which US Vice President JD Vance sought to reassure Kyiv and European capitals of Washington’s support.
According to two German government officials involved in the call, Vance emphasized that the United States would not enter into negotiations with Russia regarding Ukraine without including both Ukraine and Europe.
Following the call, Vice President Vance addressed US troops at RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom, reiterating America’s commitment to European security. “One of our most important shared security goals in Europe,” Vance said, “is ending the war in Ukraine.”
Trump is set to meet with Putin in Alaska on August 15, a summit drawing international scrutiny amid shifting dynamics in the war and growing calls for a political resolution.
