FM: Ukraine eyes end to conflict by 2025 following US talks in Jeddah

18 March 2025 12:58

Ukraine believes that recent talks with the US in Jeddah have opened the door to ending the conflict by 2025. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha shared this view at the Raisina Dialogue political science conference in New Delhi.

“After Jeddah, we have gained new momentum and additional opportunities to end this war this year. We are ready for it. We are not an obstacle to peace,” Sybiha said, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

He emphasized that Ukraine is prepared to begin implementing the agreements made during the talks in Saudi Arabia.

Sybiha also noted that Ukraine is awaiting the outcome of an upcoming phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, which will help clarify the situation further. However, he reiterated that Ukraine will not compromise on its “red lines” in the conflict resolution process, specifically maintaining sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the freedom to join any alliances without interference from third countries.

Earlier, Russian presidential aide Yuriy Ushakov mentioned that Moscow has not given up on the idea of negotiations but expressed frustration over Ukraine's continued attacks on Russian territory.

Meanwhile, Trump announced that he would be speaking with Putin about the ongoing war in Ukraine, stressing that many elements of a potential final agreement had already been reached, though much work remains. "Thousands of young soldiers, and others, are being killed. Each week brings 2,500 soldier deaths, from both sides, and it must end NOW," Trump wrote on his social media platform. He added that he was looking forward to his conversation with President Putin.

The 30-day ceasefire idea was introduced during discussions between US officials and Ukrainian representatives in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on March 11. Ukraine agreed to consider the ceasefire, contingent on Russia’s acceptance of the terms.

On March 13, Putin expressed appreciation for Trump’s efforts and voiced support for the ceasefire proposal. However, he raised concerns about key issues, including the status of Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region, monitoring the ceasefire, and Ukraine's actions during the ceasefire period. Putin emphasized that any agreement must not only end the fighting but also address the underlying causes of the crisis and ensure a lasting peace.

US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz warned on March 16 that Washington might take action against Moscow if Russia refuses to agree to the proposed 30-day ceasefire.
