FSB prevents Ukraine-linked attack on Russia's Baltic Fleet
Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has said it prevented an "act of sabotage and terrorism" on facilities of the Baltic Fleet and an airport in Russia's westernmost enclave of Kaliningrad.
"As a result of the activities carried out in Kaliningrad, a local resident, a Russian national, born in 1967, an adherent of the international terrorist organisation Azov, who nurtured intentions to commit acts of sabotage and terrorism against facilities of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy and servicemen, as well as the Khrabrovo airport, was identified and detained," FSB reported on August 25, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.
The suspect "was planning to carry out an act of sabotage and terrorism and then leave for the territory of a neighbouring state on the instructions of the coordinators of the Azov international terrorist organisation located in Ukraine".
An improvised explosive device with a capacity of about 5 kg in TNT equivalent was found in the cache the suspect had equipped, as well as components for making improvised explosive devices, the report said.
The agency quotes the suspect as saying that Azov instructed him "to blow up an object located in the village of Pereslavskoye - a facility of the Baltic Fleet".
The FSB has launched criminal proceedings against the man on charges of "preparing an act of terrorism" and "illegal manufacturing of weapons".
