Georgian PM affirms commitment to EU membership, rejects compromise on sovereignty
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze affirmed, following the announcement of the presidential election results, that the government would take all necessary steps to secure the country's membership in the European Union.
"Our goal is Eurointegration, and we will do everything for this," Kobakhidze said, underscoring the country’s commitment to joining the EU, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
However, he made it clear that Georgia would not compromise on its sovereignty, independence, or territorial integrity in the accession talks. "The only thing we cannot give up on is our sovereignty," he added. Despite this, he reassured that the country remains open to meeting all other conditions for EU membership, which he believes Georgia could achieve by the end of 2030.
In a related matter, Kobakhidze addressed concerns regarding the possibility of unrest similar to Ukraine’s "Maidan" protests, which have been a source of significant political tension in the region. He confidently stated, "The attempt to organize a 'Maidan' in Georgia has failed, and it will never happen."
The Prime Minister explained that the violent forces behind previous protests had been neutralized. "Today, the radical opposition no longer has these resources," he said, adding that the once-large demonstrations had dwindled. "What remains is about 2,000 people, usually gathering on Rustaveli Avenue."
Kobakhidze also pointed out the overwhelming support for the ruling party, Georgian Dream, in the elections, noting that "over 1.12 million people supported us," compared to the feeble turnout of just a few thousand by opposition groups.
"Four parties plus the wealthiest NGOs together cannot gather even 2,000 people. This is their real situation, which is very good for our country," he said.
The Prime Minister's statements reinforce his position that Georgia’s path to EU membership remains on track, while also ensuring the political stability and sovereignty of the nation.
