Iranian protesters attack, burn mausoleum in Ilam province

08 January 2026 20:07

Protesters in Iran attacked a shrine in the village of Banhalan-e Bala in Ilam province.

Demonstrators in the Badreh district targeted shrine areas and set fire to the Abbas Mausoleum, a descendant of the Imams, in Banhalan-e Bala village, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The protesters vandalised the site and burned the mausoleum’s interior.

Nationwide demonstrations in Iran began in late December 2025 over a sharp collapse in the value of the rial and soaring inflation, spreading from Tehran’s Grand Bazaar to dozens of cities as protesters demanded economic relief and broader political change, not just isolated local grievances.

Security forces have responded with tear gas and force in several regions, and the protests have also included strikes and university demonstrations amid deepening public frustration with economic mismanagement and sanctions pressures.

According to Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRAI), at least 38 people have died so far, including civilians and members of law enforcement.
