Brutal storm batters Türkiye Roofs torn off, walls collapse, lighthouse topples / Photo

09 January 2026 09:58

A powerful storm has swept across much of Türkiye, causing widespread damage and disruption.

Wind gusts reached up to 90 km/h, tearing roofs from buildings, toppling dozens of trees, and sweeping boats away, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.

Debris from damaged roofs blocked key roads, and power outages were reported across affected regions.

In Bursa, a 22-year-old man died after a wall collapsed. In Kocaeli, schools were closed as a precaution. Istanbul, Balıkesir, and Manisa saw damage to beaches, historic buildings, and minarets.

In Balıkesir’s Burhaniye district, the storm caused the sea to surge, flooding coastal roads. Meanwhile, a roughly 10-metre lighthouse at Kireçburnu in Sarıyer was toppled into the sea by strong winds.

In Demirci, Manisa, the upper part of a mosque minaret in the Mahmutlar area was destroyed. The fallen section hit the roof of a nearby house before being blown onto the road, also damaging surrounding power lines.

Ferry and maritime services have been suspended due to the severe weather.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and stay indoors where possible.
