German cultural figures urge government to halt arms exports to Israel amid Gaza crisis
A group of prominent German cultural figures, including actress Sandra Hüller and director Fatih Akin, have publicly urged the German government and parliament to halt arms shipments to Israel.
Their appeal, part of a petition demanding a clear German stance in support of international law, humanitarian assistance, and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, has drawn significant attention, Caliber.Az reports via German media.
Representatives for both Hüller and Akin have confirmed their involvement. Among the other signatories are actors Devid Striesow and Axel Prahl, comedian Kurt Krömer, musician Fynn Kliemann, actress Laura Tonke, and climate activist Luisa Neubauer.
The petition, titled “Stop the war crimes in Gaza!”, warns of the potential for genocide, referencing warnings issued by leading international experts since October 15, 2023. These warnings, the petition notes, cite documented statements from Israeli political and military leaders that have been reviewed by top judicial bodies.
“The world has watched as the situation has worsened,” the petition declares, criticising German political leaders for failing to act on international obligations to prevent genocide. “The burden of responsibility for ignoring these warnings is immense,” it adds.
Since the Hamas-led terrorist attack on Israel nearly 20 months ago, the German government has authorised nearly €500 million in arms exports to Israel. Israel has firmly rejected all allegations of genocide. Meanwhile, the United Nations and several humanitarian agencies have described the situation in Gaza as catastrophic.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) issued strong criticism of Israel’s government last week but stopped short of introducing any punitive measures. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, ahead of a visit from his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar, reiterated Germany’s commitment to continued military support for Israel.
