US, Iran resume strikes as military confrontation flares again

02 September 2026 08:51

The United States and Iran have exchanged massive strikes, with US Central Command (CENTCOM) reporting attacks that hit Iranian vessels, radar, communications and air defence systems, while the Iranian military claimed to have struck air bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, as well as military camps in Iraqi Kurdistan.

“Today at 12 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran. The strikes follow recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region,” US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on September 1.

Several hours later, the command announced that Iranian air defence facilities, radar and communications systems, mine-laying equipment, maritime facilities and infrastructure had been hit. A video released by CENTCOM showed military aircraft taking off and missiles being launched, followed by strikes hitting vessels, ground structures and military equipment.

Iran, in turn, reported retaliatory strikes against US-linked military targets in the region. Iranian state-run Press TV said the country’s military had used missiles and drones to target an air base in Kuwait, an air base in Bahrain and military camps in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The US-Iran exchange of strikes resumed in late August following a US attack on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The two sides had not reported any reciprocal attacks during the preceding month.
