German media: BRICS+ peacekeepers could join UN mission in Ukraine
Military personnel from BRICS+ countries, including India, could potentially participate in a UN peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.
According to TAZ, a German newspaper, this proposal was put forward by one of its journalists, who stated, “A larger UN peacekeeping mission with a monitoring mandate and troops from neutral states in the Global South, especially from BRICS+ countries such as India, would be more sensible and is currently being discussed.”
The article, as per Caliber.Az, emphasizes that peacekeepers from these nations could be deployed to monitor the situation along the contact line following the settlement of the conflict.
The publication notes that the EU and NATO do not have sufficient military personnel to form a peacekeeping contingent capable of managing the extensive front line in Ukraine.
However, the German government has indicated that before any discussions about deploying military forces in Ukraine can take place, agreements on resolving the conflict must first be established. German government spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann stated, “We have repeatedly said that we should wait until peace is established in Ukraine, and then we can discuss the conditions and how it will be organized.”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has also made it clear that Poland does not plan to send troops to Ukraine. He said, “Poland will help Ukraine in the way it has done so far: depending on our financial, humanitarian, and military capabilities. We are not going to send Polish soldiers to Ukrainian territory.”
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed that the UK is ready to deploy troops to Ukraine to enforce a peace agreement. Similarly, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer has stated that Sweden is considering all options for maintaining peace in Ukraine, including the possibility of sending peacekeepers.
In November 2024, discussions about sending troops to Ukraine were reignited following the election of US President Donald Trump. On February 11, 2025, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth confirmed that the US would not send troops to Ukraine but expressed hope for a peace agreement soon.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that 100,000 peacekeepers are needed to maintain peace in Ukraine and revealed that the Ukrainian military had developed a map outlining the country’s actual need for foreign troops. On February 14, Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine is prepared to accept any peacekeeping contingent.
