China stresses Canada trade deal “not aimed at any third party”
Arrangements reached between China and Canada to address bilateral economic and trade issues are not aimed at any third party and are intended to promote world peace and prosperity, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
Speaking at a news briefing, spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the comments in response to recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who threatened to impose a 100-percent tariff on Canadian goods amid the growing trade partnership between Canada and China, Xinhua reports.
“China holds that all countries should handle relations with each other in a win-win rather than zero-sum manner, and in a cooperative rather than confrontational way,” Guo said.
He emphasized that China and Canada have established a new strategic partnership and implemented specific measures to properly manage economic and trade issues between the two countries. “This reflects the spirit of equality, openness, inclusiveness, peaceful cooperation and shared benefits,” he said.
Guo added that the bilateral arrangements are “not targeted at any third party and are in line with the common interests of the two peoples. They also benefit world peace, stability, development, and prosperity.”
