Romanian forces detonate drone in Black Sea near Midia port
Romanian authorities detonated a drone fragment found drifting near the port of Midia in the Black Sea on January 26, officials confirmed.
The object was initially reported by a sailor who immediately alerted the Coast Guard, Caliber.Az reports, citing Romanian media.
Representatives of the Ministry of Defence and specialised explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) divers from the 39th Diver Centre were dispatched to the scene, supported by the Coast Guard patrol vessel MAI 3065, to assess the object and ensure it posed no threat to navigation.
Investigators believe the fragment is likely part of an aerial drone that had been struck over Ukraine, subsequently fell into the sea, and was carried by currents towards Romanian waters. The area was closely monitored during the operation, with no reported naval incidents.
At the time of discovery, authorities could not confirm whether the drone was military or civilian, or if it belonged to a private operator. Following a controlled detonation by Romanian military personnel, the area was declared safe.
The Ministry of Defence emphasised that the swift response ensured maritime safety and that the Coast Guard, alongside EOD specialists, continues to monitor the region for any similar objects.
