German chancellor faces heckling at Baltic Sea campaign event

01 September 2026 10:50

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was booed and heckled by protesters during a campaign visit on Monday, August 31, to the Baltic Sea resort of Kühlungsborn in northeastern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Some protesters on the beach promenade called Merz a “warmonger” and “Pinocchio,” while others chanted “Resign!” according to Frankfurter Rundschau.

The heckling prompted a reaction from other members of the crowd, with some calling for restraint and decency in the way the chancellor's critics were treated.

Merz spoke with members of the public from behind barriers at a campaign stand.

His team did not issue a statement after the appearance, despite an earlier announcement that one was expected.

The incident comes less than three weeks before state elections are due to be held in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
