PM Magyar accuses EU of unfair treatment over Hungary’s migration stance

The European Union’s leadership is treating Hungary unfairly because of Budapest’s refusal to accept migrants on its territory, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said.

Speaking at the Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia, Magyar stressed that Hungary pays Brussels €1 million every day for “protecting the common European borders,” Caliber.Az reports.

“You know, it's quite difficult to explain to the Hungarians why Hungary is treated so unfairly in Brussels, concerning these issues. <...>  It's not fair, I think. And nobody is ready to solve this issue,” he added.

Hungary has faced ongoing legal disputes with the EU over its asylum procedures since a 2020 European Court of Justice ruling found that the country violated EU law by restricting access to asylum applications and related rights for applicants. 

In June 2024, the Court imposed a €200 million lump-sum penalty plus a daily fine of €1 million for non-compliance with that earlier judgment, with the amounts continuing to accumulate and being deducted from Hungary’s EU budget allocations. 

After Péter Magyar’s Tisza party defeated Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz in the April 2026 parliamentary elections, Magyar took office as prime minister in May. His government has maintained a firm rejection of mandatory migrant relocation and the EU Migration and Asylum Pact while seeking to resolve or obtain refunds of the accumulated fines.
