Germany to close Tehran's consulates over execution of dual national
Germany has decided to close all Iranian consulates within its borders in response to the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, a dual national who held German and US citizenship.
However, the German embassy in Tehran will remain operational. The execution of Sharmahd has significantly strained diplomatic relations between Berlin and Tehran, the German foreign ministry said, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.
In addition to recalling its ambassador from Iran, Germany has summoned the Iranian charge d'affaires to formally express its protest. The ambassador departed Iran on October 30. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized that diplomatic relations are already at a low point and noted that more Germans are being held unjustly, reaffirming Germany's commitment to securing their release.
Sharmahd, a 68-year-old software developer and California resident, was executed on October 28 after being abducted by Iranian agents in 2020 during a trip to the UAE. He was sentenced to death in February 2023 on charges related to national security.
In light of the execution, the European Union announced it is considering targeted measures against Iran. The EU condemned Sharmahd's execution and expressed solidarity with Germany, with EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell also voicing similar concerns.
