Poland summons Russian ambassador over “aggressive actions”

Poland has summoned Russian Ambassador Georgy Mikhno to the Foreign Ministry to convey Warsaw’s “strong opposition to the escalation of Russia’s aggressive actions." 

The move follows Poland’s statement on September 2 expressing solidarity with Germany “following information confirming Russia's responsibility for the attempted attack at Leipzig airport in August this year,” RMF24 reports.

German authorities earlier this week accused Russia of being behind an attempted drone attack targeting a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport.

In response, the German government announced plans to close a Russian consulate and a Russian cultural centre in Berlin.

Maciej Wewiór, a spokesman for Poland’s Foreign Ministry, said Warsaw would use the meeting with Mikhno to express “our strong opposition to the escalation of Russia's aggressive actions.”

Wewiór also said the summons reflected Poland’s solidarity with its ally, Germany, noting that Warsaw and other countries have faced “similar actions by Russia.”

The development comes amid a wave of suspected sabotage incidents reported across Europe in recent weeks, with Moscow blamed for several of them. The incidents have heightened concerns that Russia may be testing NATO’s defences and targeting countries supporting Ukraine.
